Listen to our latest song, "cellphone"
thoughts on 'cellphone', a new song next week, where's nico & why substack
TL;DR - i’m in search of longer form, more in depth communication. i’m sharing our latest song, ‘cellphone’ & we have a song out next week called Terminal Woes which you can now pre-save for a chance to win a double CARISMA LP :)
1. On communication
I’ve entered 2024 with the intent of finding the balance between hope and exhaustion. I generally have more questions than answers and though it feels pressing and existential, it’s also comforting to feel curiosity, thirst for knowledge, and a desire to take it all in, like a child discovering the world.
I have been trying to reconcile my relationship with social media and the internet in general. I find that too often we take in bite sized information and give bite sized information. Our modern interactions are set up to trade in depth of ideas for superficial, ephemeral thoughts and opinions. When was the last time you read through a full think piece, a book? Sat and read the liner notes on an album or the text of that art book that sits on your coffee table?
I’ve been trying to figure out the best way to communicate in these emails around our album - I don’t want to be part of the bite size information movement. I want to encourage myself and the people who listen to my music to find a little bit more depth in our interactions.
In December, we released a new song. The song is called “cellphone” and if you attended any of our fall shows, you will remember it as the acoustic intimate song of the set. It’s a soft song about the fears of a world where everyone is connected to a screen. I had a vision of a moment in time where if I refused input and the entire world only chose input, I’d be the last woman standing in a field - with flowers, in the sun - but alone.
We forget that every moment we choose to engage with screens, we are forgoing real human connection. It’s no surprise there is a loneliness epidemic. With this song, I want to encourage you to rethink how you are interacting with screens and think of all the other things you could be doing if you weren’t spending an average of 4 hours on your phone.

3. Terminal Woes
Next week, we are releasing a new song called Terminal Woes. I will write more in depth about that but I’m doing a giveaway of a CARISMA double LP for people who pre-save the song.
4. You might ask, where’s Nico?
Nico and I are best friends and we both make up Salt Cathedral. We conceptualize, write and produce our music together. However, I’ve always written all the melodies and lyrics and been mostly the one to seek connection in the community of people who listen to us. This newsletter is my writing and outreach but the ethos of the music comes from both of us. Maybe I can bring Nico in for some guest posts & music recommendations.
5. Why substack?
I want a to create a space for in depth thoughts about creativity, music making, time usage and just generally share & explore the themes on the upcoming record - what are the anxieties, fears and woes that come with being a human in a modern, ever connected world. Plus you can comment and this will live on substack.
This newsletter on substack is free but there is an option to subscribe for $5 monthly if you’d like to directly support the music and thoughts behind this.
xx
